More info: Checking further, I found that a William Shutterly and a Samuel Shutterly served in the Civil War for Iowa. Since the name is unusual, I wondered if there was a connection. I thought that at least William H. Shutterly should be in Pennsylvania in the 1850 census, so I found the following:
1850 US Federal Census, Washington Co., PA, West Bethlehem, enumerated 25 Sept, line 27, dwelling 369, family 369:
Lewis Shutterly, age 47, b. Delaware, laborer
Mary Shutterly, age 49, b. PA
Martha J. Shutterly, age 25, b. PA
Alexander Shutterly, age 22, b. PA
Sarah A. Shutterly, age 17, b. PA
Amanda Shutterly, age 20, b. PA
Wm. H. Shutterly, age 18, b. PA
James A. Shutterly, age 16, b. PA
Elizabeth Shutterly, age 14, b. PA
Samuel Shutterly, age 12, b. PAI find a Samuel Shutterly in Fremont Co., Iowa, and Amanda Shutterly and Samuel Shutterly living in Fremont Co., Iowa, in the 1860 census. This might be your family but will take more research.
In the Biographical and Historical Record of Wayne and Appanoose County, p.745 , Mr. E. H. Shutterly was named as one of the original organizers of Camp 65, Sons of Veterans group.
I hope this helps to give you new places to search.
