Reginald Ulrich “Sam” Manderfield was born July 23, 1921 to William and Margaret Balk Manderfield. He died Oct. 28, 2003 and is buried in Saint Francis Cemetery, Fayette, IA.

Robert Richard Manson was born June 17, 1924 to Harry Hugo and Lela B. Schug Manson. He died Aug. 9, 1942 and is memorialized at the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines.
Petty Officer Manson served in World War II with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Jarvis (DD-393) which sank off Guadalcanal. He was MIA/FOD/KIA in the service of his country.

Walter Lloyd Mattern was born Jan. 25, 1915 to Philip James and “Sarah" Sadie Rutter Mattern. He died July 22, 1944 and is buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Hawaii.
Pvt. Mattern served in World War II with the U.S. Marine Corps 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines and died of wounds received in action on Guam.

Wilbur Clyde Mattern was born June 20, 1920 to Philip James and Sarah “Sadie" Rutter Mattern. He died Nov. 21, 1943 and is memorialized at the Courts of the Missing, Court 4, Honolulu Memorial, Honolulu, Hawaii. * His remains were found later and buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.**
Pvt. Mattern served in World War II with the U.S. Marine Corps 8th Marines, 2nd Marine Division and was KIA in combat operations in the Tarawa Landing. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
Six years later, his hometown community of Oelwein would honor Wilbur’s service and sacrifice by dedicating AmVets Post 122; it would be named for Pfc. Mattern and his brother Walter (killed on Guam just 8 months after Wilbur), as well as two Roepke boys and two Vermillion boys.
**For more than 71 years, Mattern remained buried on that island where he and so many of his brothers-in-arms fell. In June of 2015, Mattern was found by a non-governmental organization, History Flight, which notified DPAA that they discovered a burial site on Betio Island and recovered the remains of what they believed were 36 U.S. Marines who fought during the battle. On the 73rd anniversary of the day he gave his life, Pfc. Mattern was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.

August Mihm was born Mar. 12, 1912 to Frank and Anna Bruering Mihm. He died Aug. 26, 1942 and is buried in Saint Lukes Catholic Cemetery, Saint Lucas, IA.
Pvt. Mihm served in World War II with the U.S. Army and died while in the service of his country.

Dean Herbert Moore was born July 9, 1923 to Lisle and Ethel Nichol Moore. He died Aug. 5, 1995 and is buried in Eagle Point National Cemetery, Eagle Point, OR.

Alfred Charles Moyle was born Feb. 12, 1914 to Charles A. and Rena M. Wood Moyle. He died Dec. 15, 1945 and is memorialized at the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines and in Fort Snelling Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN.
Petty Officer Moyle served in World War II with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Langley (CV-1) and was one of the survivors of the sinking of that ship. The survivors were taken aboard the USS Pecos (AO-6) which was then sunk. The USS Whipple (DD-217) arrived on the site of the sinking of the Pecos and rescued 222 men. Alfred was not among them.
