THE KOREAN WAR CASUALTIES
RINGGOLD COUNTY, IOWA
The Korean War was a military conflict between North Korean (Democratic People's Republic of
Korea) and South Korea (Republic of Korea) regimes in which hostilities were from June 25, 1905 until the armistice
which was signed on July 27th of 1953. The conflict arose when the two Korean powers attempted to re-unify Korea under
their respective governments. The area of contemption was the 38th Parallell. Negotiations ended when the North Korean
Army invaded South Korean on June 25, 1950. Nations allied with the United States intervened on behalf of South Korean
under the aegis of the United Nations. North-allied Chinese forces intervened on behalf of North Korea which shifted
the balance of the war and ended in an armistice that approximately restored the original boundary which was under
contention at the beginning of the war. As a result, the United States and the Soviet Union entered into a period
known as the Cold War. Casualties for the United States were 36,516 K.I.A.; 2,830 non-combat casualties; 92,134 wounded;
8,176 M.I.A.; and 7,245 P.O.W.s.
