Hi Kathie –
It is so very nice to hear from you. My great grandfather’s name was David Gose Patterson. He had three sisters, one of whom was your great, great grandmother, Margaret Victorine. I have written two books about the Patterson move from Virginia to Iowa. My first was principally focused on my great grandfather, David, (whom I am named after), and his family. Ephraim and Margaret would have been my grandfather’s uncle and aunt. However, my grandfather, John Edgar “Edd” Patterson was born a year after Margaret’s death.
My second book had a broader emphasis, delving more extensively into the lives of David’s siblings and their descendants. I have one chapter devoted extensively to Margaret V.’s life, but she shows up in other parts of the book as well. As I’m sure you are aware, when Margaret died in 1882, at the young age of 38, she left behind some young children, one of whom was your great grandfather, Charles. He was six years old at the time. I was unable to locate Charles in the Iowa Census of 1885. He was not living with his father at that time. Do you know where he lived between the time of his mother’s death and when he appears in Iowa Falls, in 1895, living with his father, Ephraim? I found it interesting that Ephraim, and three of his sons: William Edward, Charles Ephraim, and Albert Clarence all chose working on the railroad to be their occupations. I was unable to find much information about their brother, James Edward, who died in Sacramento, California in December 1938.
I am continuing to research information about James Robert Patterson, Margaret V.’s and David’s father. He has turned out to be an enigma, but I am making progress in discovering more about him as the weeks go by.
I have been trying to locate a gentleman by the name Stephen R. Page who did a lot of research on the Patterson family in 2002. I am wondering if he came from Ephraim and perhaps Margaret V.’s family. I tried to locate him but, so far, I have had no success. Might you know how he connects to our family, and whether he still is alive? Thanks to some information he put together and shared with one of the family, I was able to piece together some more details about the Ephraim Thompson family.
I would be happy to discuss more information with you, if you desire. The copy of my latest book which contains the chapter devoted to your great, great grandparents Margaret and Ephraim and their descendants is entitled, Carry Me Forth From Old “Virginny”: Tripping With The James R. Patterson Family Across Two Centuries (1813 – 2018) published in 2018. I still have a few copies left if you might be interested.
Are you the person who has been in contact with my distant cousin, Martin Davis? He mentioned that someone might be mailing me a query.
Best wishes to you,
David Coe
