July 8, 1840 ---- March 31, 1922
Emelie Sopha Verley, daughter of David and Mary Verley, was born in Alsace-Lorraine, July 8, 1840. February 8, 1870, she was united in marriage to David Bernard. In 1891 she and her husband, with the children, came to America and settled in Illinois where they lived until 1902. In that year they came to Iowa and settled near Woolstock, which place has been her home, with the exception of a brief stay in Minnesota, until her death. At the age of 15, Mrs. Bernard was confirmed and united with the French Lutheran church in Alsace-Lorraine. To her religious vows she remained faithful. Her husband preceded her in death two years ago. There were born to her six children. Two died in France. One Mrs. Jean Ahnne, preceded her mother to the land beyond February 11, 1917. There remain to mourn her departure, March 31, 1922, Paul Bernard, Ottawa, Ill.; Mrs. Louisa Hazeman, Elk River, Minn., Prosper E. Bernard, Galt, Iowa; thirteen grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Piper at the French Lutheran church and interment was made in the adjoining cemetery. Gen. 5:24 is a fitting epitaph "And Enoch walked with God, and he was not; for God took him."
