"Uncle Charlie" Evans was my great uncle, brother to my grandpa George Calvin Evans, who lived the latter part of his life in Winnebago County, Illinois (Loves Park).
I had the great privilege, as a child, of witnessing the reunion of Uncle Charlie, my Grandpa and great Uncle Jim, at Uncle Charlie's house, sometime in the 1970s. The three brothers had not spoken for decades, robbing my mother and other of their offspring of a relationship for decades. Apparently it related to a family squabble over the division of the family farm. My mother, Naomi Elizabeth Evans Huffman Whyte, now 92, loved her dad dearly but always thought him in the wrong on this squabble. (her sole dear sibling was the late Shirley Evans Snively, also in Winnebago County, Ill.). Mom was thrilled when her dad and uncles finally reunited. She taught her five children never to let money come between family ties. So, I guess sometimes the "sins of the fathers" are not repeated. My grandpa was a wonderful man, and I'm certain his brothers were, too. But we have always heard mom, in our brains, saying "family is more important than money." She was, and is, right.
Grandpa G.C. Evans married my father's mom, a widow, India Plummer Huffman Evans, born in Tipton Co., Ind., in the 1950s, long after his first wife, my maternal grandmother, Eva Elnora Sheldon Evans, had died.
