Stanley Theodore Shepherd, 86, Fort Madison, a former two-term state legislator, died at 5:40 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, at the Fort Madison Nursing Care Center. He had been in failing health for several years.
Mr. Shepherd was born Sept. 15, 1903, at Bentonsport. He moved to Fort Madison in 1916. He worked as a telegrapher for the Santa Fe Railway as a young man and retired as a sales auditor from the W.A. Sheaffer Pen Company in 1965 with 50 years of service. He served four years as a state of representative from Lee County following his retirement from Sheaffer. He also was employed for one year by the Internal Revenue Service for one year.
He was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, the Fort Madison Chamber of Commerce, the Elks Lodge, the Senior Citizens, the sons of the American Revolution and was a charter member of the Fort Madison Junior Chamber of Commerce.
On July 21, 1927, at Sac City, he married Thelma Iona Gentry, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Robert of San Diego, Calif.; a daughter, Mrs. Harlan (Sara Ann) Johnson, Hot Springs Village, Ark.; a brother, Donald of Fort Madison; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, a nephew and two nieces.
He was preceded in death two brothers. His parents were Harry A. and Eva Mae Gaston Shepherd.
The body has been cremated. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, May 4, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Richard Moore will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
A memorial is being established with St. Luke's Episcopal Church.
The Barr Memorial Chapel in charge of arrangements.
