Boy Bicyclist, 7, killed in Batavia

BATAVIA - A 7-year-old Douds boy was killed in an accident at 10:40 a.m. Monday when the bicycle he was driving from a Batavia convenience store parking lot was hit by a car driven by a Fairfield man.

An Iowa Highway Patrol trooper said Joey Jeffrey Krouse was killed when he left the Kwik'N'EZ parking lot on his bike. The patrolman said the boy pulled in front of a westbound 1979 Pontiac driven by Dale Ruby, 72, of 601 S. Fifth St., on Highway 34.

The boy was transported by RMMS Ambulance Service to Ottumwa Regional Health Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Assisting the patrol in the accident were the Jefferson County sheriff's office, the Wapello County sheriff's office and Batavia First Responders.

Joey Krouse was born March 23, 1982, in Iowa City, the son of Jeffrey Krouse of Batavia and Jodi Berry Stone of Douds. He was a first grader at Cardinal Elementary School.

He is survived by his parents and one brother, Justin R. Krouse of Douds. Also surviving are grandparents Jim and Shirley Krouse of Keosauqua, Robert and Darlene Schillerstrom of Brighton and Gary and Linda Berry of Douds.

Great-grandparents surviving are Mildred Wiesenhofer of Mount Vernon, Vera Krouse of Donnellson, Lorene Reinier of Ollie, Ed Reinier of Fairfield and Edith Schillerstrom of Fairfield.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Behner Funeral Home with the Rev. John Meyers officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday. Memorials may be made to the family.
