George Dunn Weiny

George Dunn Weiny, 85, of Keokuk, an early leader in the labor movement here, died March 22, 1989, in Phoenix, Ariz., where he had been staying with a daughter.

Mr. Weiny was born May 24, 1903, in Milton, Iowa, a son of Frank Elmer and Ruth Estelle Dunn Weiny. He was the fourth generation of an Iowa pioneer family. On June 12, 1928, he married Emma Vivian Kraushaar of Keokuk. She died June 23, 1976. He later married Lucille Hendrix on Dec. 30, 1982. She died November 1988.

A 1927 graduate of Iowa Wesleyan College, Mr. Weiny taught school and coached in Kansas and Montana before moving to Keokuk in 1933. He worked briefly with his father-in-law in the house decorating business, and for five years owned and operated a tavern. In 1935, he was employed by the Hubinger Co. where he helped form the Grain Millers Union. He retired in 1968 as general vice president of the American Federation of Grain Millers International. He is named in the Iowa Labor Hall of Fame.

Mr. Weiny was an active member and supporter of many professional, fraternal and service organizations, including the Eagle Aerie 683, Masonic Lodge 29 and Shrine. His career as a community leader included serving as chairman of the Civil Service Commission for 28 years; as a member of the City Planning Commission, the Urban Renewal Board and the Industrial Development Commission; and as board member of the Keokuk Baseball Commission and the Junior Achievement Council. He also was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Elizabeth L. Kanes of Santa Fe, N.M., and Vivian Harris of Phoenix; two sons, George A. Weiny of San Bernardino, Calif., and Philip K. Weiny of Upland, Calif.; 19 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three nieces, including Evelyn Humphrey of Milton; and five nephews. He also was preceded in death by a brother and two grandchildren.

Services were conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 28, 1989 at DeJong Funeral Home, Keokuk

Memorials may be made to the Eagles in Keokuk or the Shriners Crippled Children's Hospital.
