Lt. Col. Richard E. Armstrong

Services for Lt. Col. Richard (Dick) E. Armstrong, age 76, of 4717 Observatory Road, Des Moines, Iowa was private at the Glendale Cemetery. Armstrong died March 5, 1989 at his home.

Colonel Armstrong was born in Volland, Kansas January 31, 1913. He received his high school education at Riley, Kansas and graduated from Kansas State University in 1935. He was a high school coach and teacher in Kansas before joining the regular USAF in 1941. He retired from the Air Force in 1964 as a Lt. Colonel and credit for 29 1/2 years of service. Eight years of this active service was at Drake University where he served two tours as the Professor of Air Science of the AFROTC program. He earned his Masters and Educational Specialist Degrees from Drake University and served in the following schools after his retirement from the USAF in 1964: Dallas Center High School, Van Buren Community School District, Keosauqua, Iowa; Iowa Methodist School of Nursing; Ayshire Community School District.

Colonel Armstrong was a member of the following organizations while living in Des Moines; American Legion; Methodist Church; Des Moines Sojourners; Des Moines Rotary Club; The Retired Officers Association; Des Moines Tennis Club; Drake University Men's Faculty Clut(Club). He was a USAFA Athletic charter member.

Survivors include his wife, Elva, son and daughter-in-law, daughter and son-in-law, Springfield, Mo. and two grandchildren.
