Gladys Mae Meredith Baughman

Gladys Mae Meredith Baughman, 84, of Bloomfield, died at 6:00 P.M. on Thursday, August 3, 1989 in the Long Term Care Unit of Davis County Hospital in Bloomfield. She was born November 13, 1904 near Bonaparte, Iowa to Otto Earle Meredith and Cassie B. Krenmeyer Meredith. She grew up in the Bonaparte area and graduated as class valedictorian in 1923 from Bonaparte High School. Gladys attended Parsons College and University of Iowa to prepare for a career of teaching; in 1930 she was granted a life validation to teach in the State of Iowa. Gladys taught at Bentonsport, Iowa as well as Bonaparte, Iowa. It was there that she boarded with Bayard and Esther Fordemwalt and met Esther's brother Harold Christian Baughman, who she married on January 3, 1929 at the home of his sister, Edna and Victor Swartzendruver near Pulaski.

Gladys was a member of the Pulaski Mennonite Church, a lifetime member of Presidents Club, Bluffton College, a past member of the Bluffton College Women's Auxiliary, the Waubonsie Club, and the Auxiliary of the Independent Telephone Pioneer Association. She participated fully in the family's farm operation, expecially(err) in the registration of pedigrees of Brown Swiss and Angus cattle herds which were important to the business. Gladys served as a Sunday School teacher in the Pulaski Church for a period exceeding forty years.

Surviving are two daughters: Joy Evans and her husband Steven; Mary Ann Fisher and her husband Lloyd of Bloomfield; and three sons: James M. Baughman and wife, Carol; William C. Baughman and wife, Barbara of Pulaski; and Glenn R. Baughman and wife, Ann-Marie, of Des Moines; Also surviving are fifteen grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Edith Meredith, of Troy; and by seven great grandchildren.

Gladys was preceded in death by her husband on July 16, 1987, by her parents, her brother, Merle, who died July 6 of this year, an infant son, and an infant granddaughter.

The service was held Sunday, August 6, 1989 at Pulaski Mennonite Church at rural Pulaski with burial in the Pulaski Cemetery; Pastor John Bergen officiated. Wagler Funeral Home of Bloomfield was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to her church.
