Olatha M. Tweedy

Olatha M. Tweedy, 85, of Iowa City, died Wednesday, Feb. 8, 1989, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a lengthy illness.

She was born Feb. 8, 1904, in Mexico, Mo., the daughter of William Henry and Anna Emmaline Storks Miller. She married Robert James Tweedy March 11, 1927, at Montrose. He died Aug. 25, 1988.

She graduated from Oakville High School, attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, received secretarial certification from Iowa Success Business School of Ottumwa, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in commerce in 1952 from the University of Iowa.

She taught for four years at Iowa Success Business School and for many years was the secretary to the director of the Iowa and Federal Geological Survey in Iowa City.

She was a past president of the Robert Lucas Chapter of the National Secretaries Association. She was named Iowa City Secretary of the Year in 1957. She was a member of the University Women, a past officer of the Iowa Certified Professional Secretaries Association, a member of the First United Methodist Church, was active in United Methodist Women, and belonged to the Order of Eastern Star.

She is survived by three sons, Roger W. of Mt. Pleasant, Robert H. of Brookfield, Wis.; and Donald J. of Keosauqua; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Her parents, three brothers and a sister preceeded(sp) her in death.

Memorial services will begin at 11:15 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at the George L. Gay Funeral Home in Iowa City with the Rev. Wilbur Wilcox officiating.

There will be no public visitation. Burial will be in the Montrose Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Iowa City.
