Alden L. Smock passed away at his home, north of town (Cromwell), Saturday morning. The death which was not unexpected, casts a gloom of sadness over the entire community. Mr. Smock had in in failing health for the past year. In the early spring time he was taken to a hospital where he submitted to an operation and for a time high hopes were held for his recovery only to be blighted. He was born in Pennsylvania June 13, 1874, and came here with his parents, when about nine years of age, and was living on the farm settled by them some 43 years ago, which after their passing away has since been his home. He was united in marriage, June 7, 1900 to Miss Fannie Bacon, by whom he is survived; also a daughter, Hazel, and son Harry, both at home. Two sisters and two brothers survive him; Mrs. L. O. (Mary) Corey, of Creston; Mrs. Rachel Morland of Des Moines, Wells Smock of Tingley and M. D. (Minus) Smock of Cromwell. He was highly respected by all who knew him, being of a friendly in nature, quiet, and unassuming in manner, a lover of his home. Funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. C. S. Baird and were largely attended. There were a number of relatives fropm elsewhere, also many from this community, and from Corning and Creston. Interment was in the Cromwell Cemetery.

"Alden L, Smock, the son of Samuel Harrison Smock and Sarah (Dunn) Smock, was born in Crawford County, Pennsylvania. He came to Iowa shortly after the civil war. His father was a civil war veteran and is buried in the Cromwell Cemetery. Alden had four brothers and sisters: Wells, Minus, Mary (Corey), and Rachel (Moreland).

Frances Edna Bacon and Alden Smock were married in 1900. Frances' parents were Charles Henry Bacon and Mary (Harrington) Bacon, and they lived on a 640 acre farm northwest of Cromwell. Alden and Frances had two children; Hazel Fern born in 1901 and Charles Harrison born in 1903. The family lived on the home farm two miles north of Cromwell and attended the Congregational Church there. "
