Emma Kelly, 78, Thayer, Dies

Emma Caroline Kelly, 78, of Thayer died on September 5, 2004 at Providence Medical in Kansas City, Kansas.

Services were September 11, at Powers Funeral Home, Afton. A memorial will be established in her name.

Mrs. Kelly, daughter of Sarah Caroline (Brown) and Charles Edward Pope Sr., was born January 28, 1926, in Fort Scott, Kansas. She grew up in Bronson, Kansas., Burlington and West Des Moines, She was educated at the Kansas State School for the Deaf and Iowa State School for the Deaf.

On January 3, 1948, she married Raymond Herbert Kelly Sr. in Grinnell. They lived in Indianola and Waukee before moving to rural Thayer in 1969. She was a homemaker and former member of the Lutheran Church in Des Moines.

Survivors include two daughters, Caroline Kelly of Marion, Kansas, and Mary Kelly (husband Dani Williams) of Afton; five sons, Bill Kelly of Creston, Ray (wife Ruthann) Kelly Jr. of Washington, Iowa, Vernon (wife Dodie) Kelly Sr, and Rex (wife Kris) Kelly, all of Thayer, and Kim (wife Carol) Kelly of Omaha, Nebraska; two brothers, Richard (wife Sharon) Pope and Charles (wife E.J.) Pope, all of East Moline, Illinois; one sister, Mollie Schmitz of Burlington; 18 grandchildren amd 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Raymond; brother-in-law Bill Schmitz and son-in-law, Dr. John Barr, Jr.
