Death
Katherine Johnson
Katherine (Kay) Johnson, 73, of Story City, died Monday, April 1, 2002 of a heart attack at her home. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 4, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Story City, with Pastors Stephen Anenson and John Engelstad officiating. Emily Anderson served as organist. Vocalist was Harris Twedt, Jr. who sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "The Lord's Prayer." Casket bearers were Sterling Anderson, Richard Larimer, Keith Osmundson, John Norlin, Bob Gibson and Willard Oppedal. Burial was at the Story City Cemetery.
Katherine Johnson was born Oct. 28, 1928 in Ames, Iowa to Jay and Inis (Reynolds) Mathews. She graduated from Gilbert High School in 1946 and Iowa State University in 1950 with a degree in mathematics. She married Howard B. Johnson on Spt. 24, 1950. Following their marriage she resided in Story City. She was a bookkeeper for her husband's business, Joy & Johnson Auction Co.
Kay was a homemaker, a 4-H leader for many years, a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority, DAR and Immanuel Lutheran Church. She enjoyed following sports, sewing, millinery and traveling in the family motor home.
Survivors include her husband, Howard of Story City, and two daughters, Vicki Johnson of Story City and Sheryl Phipps and husband Harold of Story City.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
