This family stories of Joseph Jonas and that of his son Peter Jonas were taken from the St. Mary’s Catholic Church Book of 1883-1983, page not numbered. The stories were transcribed for this BIOS by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes have been added. Narration notes such as spellings were written as were found in the cited source.

JOSEPH JONAS FAMILY

Joseph Jonas was born Sept 22, 1852 at Herresbach, Prussia consisting of about 25 houses – a lot of straw roofs.

Gertude Thelen was born Dec 20, 1863 at Herresbach, Prussia They were married Jan 11, 1991 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Council Bluffs, IA.

In about 1884 they came by covered wagon and homesteaded three miles south of Alton. Peter was born at Council Bluffs and moved with them to Alton. Mathias, Anna, Katherine, Nicholas, Mary, John, John, and Aloysious joined the family. John was pulling a coaster across the railroad track and was killed at the age of 2 yrs. Nicholas drowned in the Floyd River at the age of 16. Joseph died Oct 22, 1901 and Gertrude died Feb 9, 1899

Mary Gertrude Thelen was born 20 Dec 1863 Herresbach, Landkreis Mayen-Kolenz, Rheinland
Pfalz Germany and died Feb 9, 1900 Alton IA. Her parents were Johann Peter Thelen 1837-1891 and Maria Margaretha Schneider 1839-1873. Joseph and Gertrude were the parents of nine children namely:

6. Mary Jonas born 2 Mar1892 died 1 Aug 1966 Portland OR She married Alfred H. Reichow.

PETER JONAS FAMILY – Taken from the St. Mary’s Catholic Church book of 1883-1983

Peter Jonas Sr. was born April 1, 1882 at Plummers Settlement, 12 miles south of Council Bluffs, Iowa. At the age of two he moved with his parents, Joseph and Gertrude Thelen Jonas, to a farm near Alton, Iowa.

He married Eva Diederich on September 6, 1910 at Granville, Iowa. She was born November 18, 1885 at Granville, the daughter of Jacob and Catherine Friedman Diederich.

At the age of 16, when his parents died, he assumed the responsibility of the family and the farm. The farm will be in the family 100 years in 1984.

Peter and Eva were the parents of ten children Mildred, Victor, Gertrude, Bernice, Aloysious, (Bud), Ivo and Zeno (twins), Jeanne, Peter Jr, and Charmaine. All are graduates of St. Mary’s Academy, Alton. Three of the children are deceased: Mildred, Gertrude and Zeno. Peter Jonas Sr. died July 8, 1958 and Eva Jonas died November 25, 1967.

OBITUARY of Peter Jonas 1864-1959 Source: Alton Democrat (7-16-1959) Born: April 1, 1864 Died: July 18, 1959
Peter Jonas, well known retired farmer of this vicinity died at his residence in Alton Wednesday night after an extended illness. Funeral services were held from St. Mary’s Catholic Church Saturday at 9:30 A.M. Reverend Math Jonas, his brother of Slayton, Oregon officiated, assisted by Monsignor Reising and Monsignor Gaul of Portsmouth, Iowa with burial in the church cemetery. Mass servers were Dick and Bob Schneider, Charles Hastert and Roger Ruppert. Pallbearers were nephews, Robert, Gerald and Matthew Jonas, Frank, Joe and Lawrence Spieler.
Mr. Jonas had lived on the same farm three miles south of here for 66 years until he retired and moved to Alton in 1950. He came with his parents the late Joseph and Gertrude Jonas to the farm two years after his birth April 1, 1882 in what was then known as Plumer’s Settlement near Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was active in farming for 49 years. On September 6, 1910 he married Miss Eva Diederich at St. Joseph’s Church in Granville, Iowa. Mr. Jonas was a director of the Alton Savings Bank and for 25 years was a township trustee. He was active in the parish of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Alton. He was an election official for many years.
Survivors include the widow, Eva, four sons, Victor M. and Ivo J. of Los Angeles, Alois, (Bud) of Alton and Peter Jr. of Remsen, five daughters, Mildred, Mrs. Kenneth Sanders of Sioux City; Gertrude, Mrs. A.H. Stanley of Blue Jay, California; Bernice, Mrs. Charles Hastert; Jean, Mrs. Don Schneider of Alton and Charmaine, Mrs. Ross Jonstone of Cedar Glen, California. One son Zeno died in infancy. Three brothers, Reverend Math Jonas of Slayton, Oregon, John of Adrian, Minnesota and Al of Ashton, Iowa; three sisters, Mrs. Carl Forster and Mrs. Arthur Nettleship of Hollywood, California and Mrs. Al Reichow of Portland, Oregon and 24 grandchildren. Two brothers, Nic and Johnny preceded him in death. The Alton community loses a fine citizen, a good neighbor and friend. The family may take comfort and pride in the memory of a wonderful husband, father, and brother--grandfather, too.

OBITUARY of Eva Diederich Mrs. Peter Jonas 1885-1967

Source: Alton Democrat (11-30-1967) Born: November 28, 1885 Died: 1967 Mrs. Peter Jonas, 82, of Alton died Saturday in Orange City Hospital after a long illness. Funeral services were at 10 A.M. Tuesday in St. Mary’s Catholic Church. The Reverend Raymond Wieling officiated and burial was in the church cemetery. Rosary was recited at 3 and 8 P.M. Monday in the Alton parish hall.
The former Eva Diederich, Mrs. Jonas was born November 28, 1885, in Granville, and was married there September 6, 1910. Mr. Jonas died in 1959. Survivors include four daughters, Gertrude, Mrs. Andy Stanley of Blue Jay, California, Bernice, Mrs. Charles Hastert and Jean, Mrs. Don Schneider, both of Alton, and Charmaine, Mrs. Ross Jonstone of Cedar Glen, California; four sons, Victor of North Hollywood, California, Al of Alton, Ivo of Los Angeles and Peter of Remsen; and 23 grandchildren.
