OBITUARY OF JOHN BUCKLEY 1817-1906
Alton Democrat, December 29, 1906
John Buckley ninety years old died Friday at his home in Maurice, Grandpa Buckley came from the Emerald Isle in 1845 and settled in New Jersey coming to the west in the seventy's and locating in the eastern part of the state.
In the year 1880 he came to Sioux county and homesteaded a farm in Sherman township on which he resided till sixteen years ago when he moved into Maurice. He leaves to mourn five daughters and one son.. They are Mrs. John Lynch and Mrs. Hugh McDonald of Maurice, Mrs. Jerry Lynch of Good River South Dakota, Miss Nora Buckley of Maurice, Sister Benedicta. of Davenport and Dan Buckley of Struble. Mr. Buckley was a man of a noble generous Christian character. He made friends everywhere he went . He was a devoted husband, a loving father, a kind neighbor whose helping hand was ever ready to assist the needy.
He was one of the pioneer builders of the St. Mary's church in Maurice and one of its most earnest members. He was a constant attendant at all services until his last illness made it hard to do so and yet he never lost interest as long as life lasted.
He has gone on to the higher life to meet his loved ones full of years and as a ripened sheaf, gathered to his father. He was ready when the final summons came—for he understood that life on earth was merely an existence. His children shall rise up and call him blessed. Yea also his kindred and friends for the end of such as he is peace. The funeral services were conducted in St. Mary's church on Sunday at one o'clock by Rev. Mc Nally who in a solemn and impressive manner performed the ritualistic services of the church over the deceased. The interment was made in St. Mary's cemetery at Maurice.
