William Duven, their son’s family story included is in the Henry Duven story from the Maurice Book.

This Henry Duven family story was taken from page 347 of the Maurice Centennial Book (1891-1991). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. The informative story is sort of difficult to follow as written including parents, children, and siblings of family members and etc. Some phrases in [ ] may have been added for clarification as well as research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg. Spellings of names were left as found in the cited source.

DUVEN FAMILY
William Duven, son of Henry and Josie (Holdenga) Duven, came to Maurice, Iowa, with his parents from Alto, Wisconsin. His brother James and sisters: Alyda, Elizabeth, Nellie, Martha and Mae were all part of the family. They settled on a farm ½ mile north of Maurice, and in the late 1890’s, their farm complex was destroyed by a tornado.

Henry Duven persuaded his brother, Charles, to move to Maurice, in July of 1896, where Charles bought half interest in a general store known as Mensink and Duven. Henry moved to Leota, Minnesota, and [then] back again to Maurice, living in a corner green house, north of the Maurice Hotel, where he died in 1910. Henry and Josie lost five siblings [ children], four of whom are buried in the Maurice Cemetery. It is told that Gerrit Brink had to mow a little of his wheat field for the first burial.

Stories of early life include that of an Indian woman who walked across the field to Grandma Duven’s house for a cup of flour, and when Grandma asked her to come in for a cup of coffee, she said she had to hurry back, as she had given birth to a baby during the night. (wow!)

In 1910, Will Duven [Henry’s son] opened a hardware and furniture store, and undertaking business. On January 25, 1911, he married Tillie De Jong, daughter of James and Jane (Pas) De Jong, also a Maurice family. He [William] was the first undertaker, as they were called then, to serve the area. His son, Wilson, was born in 1912, and in 1917, the family moved to Orange City, Iowa, where three more children were born: Josephine, Frederick and Donald. Wilson still has a robe that Rev. Father McNally gave to him at his birth. Maurice residents at that time will remember Father McNally as a great sportsman, spending many afternoons umpiring baseball games.

Will and Tillie were members of the Maurice Reformed Church, Rev. Wesselink serving as pastor at that time. Dr. Oggel was the faithful Maurice physician. Will’s hearse was a horse-drawn vehicle, with seats for two up in front. In a picture he is seen with the driver, Herman De Kraay, who is reported to have shouted to Will that he had been shot as a banana skin was thrown by a passing early motorized vehicle. Stories told to his son, Wilson, who followed his father in business, indicated many changes in business. It used to be that a patron would give a list of what he needed, and would pick it up before leaving town, whereas today they come to see what selection one has, and so much more inventory and service are required.

Will and Tillie had several members of their immediate families in Maurice. Tillie had her father, James De Jong, and mother, Jane De Jong (Pas); sisters: Hattie, Mrs. John De Kock; Anna, Mrs. Peter Van Roekel; Bertha De Jong; and brothers: Conrad of near Maurice, Hubert of Hospers, Iowa; Fred, minister and missionary at McKee Kentucky; and Harold of Orange City, Iowa.

Will and his brother James, who later moved to Orange City; Martha Beyers, who had a millinery shop in Maurice; Nellie, Mrs. Rev. Abe Beckering who moved back to Maurice from Pella, after her husband’s death. Mae stayed with her mother who lived in Orange City, until her mother’s death.

Hendrik Mathiaszen Duven was born 10 Sep 1844 Winterswijk, Gelderland, Netherlands and died 8 oct 1910 Maurice Sioux, Iowa He was the son of Mathijas Duven 1816-1885 and Aleida Strake 1818-1877.

He was first married to Jannetje ‘Jane’ Redeker born 8 Oct 1949 Apeldoorn Gelderland Netherlands and died 30 Mar 1877 Alton Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. She was the daughter of Lubbert Redeker 1814-1900 and Gerritje Van Putten 1825-1911.

After Jannetje died Hendrik was married to Josje Holdinga in 1878. She was born 7 Feb 1851 Ternaard, Friesland Netherlands and she died 8 Mar 1925 Maurice IA. Reports on line that he died in Wisconsin don’t seem to stand up. He married Tillie De Jong, see the family story in this narrative. They had three sons - Wilson of Pella. Iowa, Fred of Hastings, Nebraska, and Donald of Sioux City, Iowa; a daughter, Mrs. Clarene Hendren of Prospect Heights, Illinois

OBITUARY OF HENRY DUVEN

Henry Duven was born at Winterswyk, Netherlands on September 10, 1844. In 1846 with is parents he came to Alto, Wisconsin where later he was married to Miss Redeker, to which union were born two daughters, now Mrs. A. Muilenberg and Mrs. J. Roelofs, residing in Minnesota, when his wife was taken from him by death. The second marriage was to Miss. Josie Hollenga, which union was blessed with two sons, James and Will, and three daughters, Mrs. Bekkering, Mrs. Beyers and May.
Mr. Duven was one of the pioneers in this community, coming here from Wisconsin in the early days and residing on a farm. A few years ago he moved to Minnesota where he resided for some time and then came to Maurice where he had since lived.
Mr. Duven was a man who by an honest and straightforward life had won the respect of a large circle of friends. He was a consistent member of the First Reformed church, where he held the office of elder at the time of his death.

OBITUARY OF JOSIE MRS. HENRY DUVEN Born 7 Feb 1852 Died 17 March 1925

Mrs. Henry Duven passed away on Tuesday afternoon at 3:25 at the home of her son James Duven at Orange city after an illness of six years. Josephine Holdinga was born in the Netherlands on the 7th of Feb 1852 thus being 73 years, 1 month and 3 days old. When she was a year and a half old she moved with her parents to Wisconsin. There she was untied in marriage to Henry Duven In 1878 to whose union nine children were born, five to whom survive. They are James, William, Mae and Mrs. R. De Cook of Orange City and Mrs. Nellie Bekkering of Pella, also two stepdaughters Mrs. Roelofs and Mrs. Alex Muilenburg of Edgerton Minn. In the years 1885 she moved with her husband and children to Maurice, settling on a farm a mile north of town.
In 1900 the family moved to Edgerton Minn. Where they made their home for seven years moving back to Maruice in 1907. On Oct 15, 1910 Mr. Duven preceded her in death. About two and a half years ago she moved with her daughter Mae to Orange City where they made their home with James Duven there. Six years ago she suffered a stroke of paralysis, but was able to be up until twelve weeks ago. Since then she gradually grew worse. Beside her children she is survived by three sisters and two brothers, Philip Holdinga of Milwaukee WI, Mrs. James Poeron of San Jose CA, Mrs. Korintz of Duluth MN, and Mrs. Brooks of Brandon WI. The funeral services were held at 2:00 at the 1st Ref. Church at Maurice by both Rev. Steunenburg of Orange City and Rev. Straks of Maurice. Interment in the Maurice cemetery.

Mrs. William Duven died Saturday night at an Orange City Hospital where she had been the last four months.
Mrs. Duven, the former Tillie De Jong, was born August 11, 1887, at Maurice, Iowa. She married William Duven January 25, 1911. They lived at Maurice, Orange City and Cherokee, Iowa, where Mr. Duven was a funeral director.
Mrs. Duven returned to Orange City from Cherokee after her husband died several years ago.
Survivors include three sons - Wilson of Pella. Iowa, Fred of Hastings, Nebraska, and Donald of Sioux City, Iowa; a daughter, Mrs. Clarene Hendren of Prospect Heights, Illinois; a sister, Miss Bertha De Jong of Orange City, Iowa; a brother, Harold, of Paullina, Iowa; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren
