OBITUARY

George TENNANT, the deceased, was born in York County, Pennsylvania on January 1, 1807, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. McCLEARY in Diagonal, Iowa, on Tuesday evening September 13, 1892, at about 10:00 aged 85 years, 8 months and 12 days.

When 10 years of age, he came with his parents and resettled in Jefferson County, Ohio, where he married Susannah SCOTT in the year 1833. Six years after their marriage he became a Christian. He with his wife, who for sometime had been a member of a sister denomination, joined the Presbyterian church, where he took up his Christian duty. For years he was a leader in the services of song. He was afterward ordained Elder, the duties of which he long and faithfully performed. In the time of the institution of slavery in our country, he was a decided opposer of it, and when our country was passing through the struggle of war of the rebellion, he gave three sons who volunteered in their country's defense, one of whom was stricken with disease and died. Two children died in their infancy and nearly six years ago the companion of his youth, who had labored by his side from young manhood to old age, preceded him to glory. In the year 1862 he moved to Galia (sic) county, Ohio, and in 1856 to Des Moines County, Iowa. In the fall of 1869 he settled in Ringgold County, Rice Township, Iowa.

Nine children are still living, six in Iowa and three in Kansas, to cherish in memory a dear and faithful father, whose earthly life of service for God and man has so recently closed.

The funeral took place from the Mt. Ayr Presbyterian Church, September 14, 1892, Rev. D. INCHES, of Redding officiating. [Interment at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr.]
