OBITUARY

Helen Elizabeth REED, age 90, daughter of George and Ella (FRY) SOUTH, was born August 9, 1908 near Van Wert in Decatur County, Iowa, and died January 22, 1999, at the Ringgold County Hospital in Mt. Ayr, Iowa.

Helen attended country school near Van Wert.

Helen was united in marriage to Charlie REED December 26, 1928 at a church in Leon, Iowa. To this union 5 children were born. Helen and Charlie lived near Van Wert until they bought a farm near Kellerton, Iowa in 1948.

Helen was a homemaker and also worked at the Kellerton School as a cook for several years. She spent the last 10 years at Clearview Nursing Home in Mt. Ayr.

She was baptized at an early age and later joined the Kellerton Christian Church. She was an active member as long as her health permitted. She was also an active member of the Valentine Rebekah Lodge and the American Legion Auxiliary in Kellerton.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband Charlie REED in 1971; daughter-in-law Mary Jane REED; sisters Grace TWOMBLEY and Opal HOLMES; half-sister Florence WELDON; brothers Carl SOUTH, John SOUTH and Ira Paul SOUTH; and half-brothers Charlie SOUTH and Frank SOUTH.

Survivors include her 5 children: sons Harold REED of Pleasant Hill, Iowa; Leslie REED and wife Angela of Apache Junction, Arizona and Lloyd REED and wife Carol of Des Moines, Iowa; daughters Lucille MICKAEL and husband Kenneth, and Norma MUNYON and husband Chet, all of Kellerton; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; 3 sisters: Goldie STARK and husband Neil of Grand River, Iowa, Sylvia HALL of Decatur, Iowa and Edith PATTON of Osceola, Iowa; and a host of relatives and friends.

Services were held Monday, January 25, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. from the Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home of Leon, Iowa, with the Rev. Terry ROBERTS officiating. Rev. ROBERTS, accompanied by Vicki SAXTON on the organ, sang musical selections "Beyond The Sunset" and "Peace in the Valley".

Casketbearers were Harold REED, Leslie REED, Lloyd REED, Kenneth MICKAEL and Chester MUNYON. Interment was made at Van Wert Cemetery, Van Wert.
