Gr.grandfather's 1st wife

William Kilgore left Mills Co., IA in spring 1850 for CA. He left his wife & 2 small children with her father in "Poke County" (his spelling). I've no idea her first name or those of children. Ten yrs.later he returned to IA and married Mary Ann
Martin. Whatg happened to wife #1 and children? Family mystery, scandal (?). Any response greatly appreicated.
