Kay A. Shaffer, 74, died Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, October 13 at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in West Des Moines. Private burial will follow in Bloomington, IL.
Kay was born December 15, 1937, in Bloomington, IL. to F. Gordon and Lucille (Gaiser) McQuown. She graduated from Bloomington High School and worked for many years at State Farm Insurance Companies. She later married Frank Shaffer on February 6, 1976. They made their home in Cherry Lake, FL., and Kay worked for the Madison County Supervisor of Elections until retiring. They moved to West Des Moines in 2003. Kay was an active member of her church and a wonderful cook who enjoyed playing bridge and spending time with her grandchildren.
Kay is survived by her father, F. Gordon McQuown of Bloomington, IL; children, Chris (Cindy) Shaffer of Grimes and Lynne (Barry) Lotenberg of Arlington, VA.; step-son, Carl P. (Mary E.) Shaffer of Columbus, IN.; and seven grandchildren, Morgan Olivia Shaffer, Sienna Rachel, Lucas Conway, and Eliana Kathryn Lotenberg, Dillon Knox Christian, Mason August Malachi, and Blake Preston Gabriel Shaffer. She was preceded in death by her mother and her husband.
Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 13 at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Beautiful Savior or to Wisconsin Synod World Missions.
