Helen Louise Richards, 88, passed away Friday, October 26, at home. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at Grace Lutheran Church at 52nd and Urbandale Ave. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at Westover Funeral Home. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines. Helen was born on September 21, 1924 in Des Moines, Iowa. She was the daughter of Olaf and Clara Oberg.
Helen graduated valedictorian from East High School in 1942 and was a member of the East High Alumni Association. On December 29, 1945 Helen was united in marriage to E. Dwane Richards. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church for 59 years and its Martha Circle. Helen was also a member of T.T.T. and past president of the Iowa Pharmacist Association Auxiliary.
Helen is survived by her children: Dr. Stephen (Janice) Richards of Spirit Lake and Mark (Janet) Richards of Urbandale. She was the proud grandmother of Christopher (Melissa) Richards of Burlington, IA, Jennifer (Andrew) Lyons of Ellensburg, WA, Alison (Travis) Watson of Snohomish, WA, Megan (Ian) Boers of Urbandale, IA.
Her greatest joy was her five great-grandchildren: Shelby Boers, Rhapsody Richards, Isaac Lyons, Kyle Watson, and Quinn Boers. Helen is also survived by her sister-in-law, Cleone Oberg and a niece and five nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister and brother, her son, Dr Thomas Richards, and her husband (in 2011). In Lieu of flowers Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Lutheran Church or a charity of the donor's choice.
