Catherine "Nitsa" L. Panagos, 97, passed from this life on Monday, October 29, 2012, at Ramsey Village in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 31, at the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George, where the family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. Interment will follow services at Masonic Cemetery, in Des Moines.
Nitsa was born on February 19, 1915 in Des Moines, to Louis P. and Yeota L. (Lounges) Panagos. Nitsa graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1933; from Drake University (Des Moines, IA) in 1936 with a B.A. degree; and from the University of Iowa (Iowa City, IA) in 1938 with a M.A. degree. She was employed at the Iowa State Capitol for 41 years, as an accountant for the State Treasurer until 1979. In retirement, Nitsa volunteered at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines for 14 years. She was a life-long, dedicated member of the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George, serving as chanter for 25 years, member of the Philoptochos Society, and participated in many activities of the church.
She is survived and lovingly remembered by her cousins, Jeanne Forchas and Harriett Cheolis both of Edina, MN, and Dorothy Pappas and Jeannie Colias both of Houston, TX; one godson she loved and admired, Peter S. Cheolis; and a host of other relatives; and special friends, Ted Velman, Leona Knorr and Phyliss Fair. Nitsa was preceded into eternal life by her parents; brother, Paul L. Panagos; and a special cousin, Sam Cheolis.
