Clare Kessell Mills, 77, of the 3100 block of St. Johns Road died of cancer Saturday at home. The body was cremated, and memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St Augustin’s Catholic Church, of which she was a member. Burial of the cremains will be at Glendale Cemetery.
Mrs Mills was born in Des Moines and had lived here most of her life. She had also lived in New York City and Los Angeles. She had worked in advertising ad promotions for The Des Moines Register, KRNT and the Iowa Development Commission, and had bee a writer for Look Magazine in New York City and Mattel Inc. in Los Angeles. She was involved in Junior League, United Way of Central Iowa, the Des Moines botanical Center, the Des Mines Symphony, Visiting Nursing Services, the Society of Crippled Children and Adults, the Polk County Cancer Society, the Des Moines National Council on Alcoholism and the Des Moines Arts Center. She was a member of the Garden Club of America, Des Moines Founders Garden Club, Proteus Club and Des Moines Pioneer Club. This spring, the Greenwood Park rose garden was renamed in honor of her and her husband, Miles Jr.
She is survived by her husband; a brother, James Kessell of Huntington Beach, Calif.; and a sister, Virginia Tierman of Des Moines.
A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at Dunn’s Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Greenwood Park Internship Endowment in care of the Des Moines Parks and Recreation Department.
