Funeral services are held Oct. 9 for Bertha Roewe
Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 9 for Bertha Roewe of Laurens. Miss Roewe passed away Oct. 6 at the Good Samaritan Center at Laurens at the age of 91 years, 5 months and 12 days.
Rev. Travis Cannaday was clergyman at the 10:30 services held at the United Methodist Church of Laurens. Mrs. Florence Pohlman was organist and Dennis Larson sang "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace." Pall bearers were Bill Mather, Dale Roewe, Bob Bailey, Keith Hoffman, Gary Roewe and Bob Zeigler.
Burial was in the Laurens Cemetery with Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Bertha Theresa Roewe, daughter of August and Lena Hinn Roewe, was born May 24, 1895 on a farm east of Laurens. A lifelong resident of the Laurens community. Bertha attended rural schools in this area and graduated from the Laurens High School in 1914. After graduating from the University of Iowa in 1921, she taught Home Economics in Laurens for 40 years, retiring in 1964. She had been a resident of the Good Samaritan Center since 1980.
Bertha was a member of the United Methodist Church, the U.M.W., a 50 year member of Laurens Chapter #265 Order of Eastern Star, The Past Matrons Club, Stitchers Club, Federated Woman's Club, Past President of the American Legion Auxiliary and Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Laura Lawlor of Laurens.
Miss Roewe was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Fred and Henry and three sisters, Marie, who died in infancy, Kate and Mathilda.
