Funeral services held January 16 for Laura Lawlor
Funeral services were held on Friday, January 16 at the United Methodist Church of Laurens for Mrs. Laura Lawlor. Mrs. Lawlor passed away on Tuesday, January 13 at the Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames at the age of 85 years, 3 months and 5 days. Rev. Mervin Nelson served as clergyman for this service. Mrs. Florence Pohlman was organist and Dennis Larson sang "The Lord's Prayer." The congregation also sang one hymn. Pall bearers were Bill Mather, Gary Roewe, Mike Morgan, Bob Bailey, Dale Roewe and Mark Morgan. Interment was in Fairfield Cemetery at Albert City with the Smith Funeral Home
Laura Emma Roewe Lawlor was born October 8, 1901 to August and Magdalena Hinn Roewe on a farm just outside of Laurens. A life-long area resident, Laura attended country school near Laurens and later, after her family moved to town, she graduated from the Laurens High School in 1919. She attended the University of Iowa and graduated with a degree in English in 1923. She later took classes at the University of Minnesota, Drake University and Buena Vista College. She taught school in Laurens, Sulphur Springs, Marathon, Brooke and Albert City. In 1941, she was married to Wesley Lawlor. They began their married life in Brooke where Wes was superintendent and Laura taught English and speech. During that time, their daughter, Maureen was born. In 1943 they moved to Albert City where the rest of their married life was spent until Wes died of a heart attack in 1962. During that time they had been members of the Evangelical Covenant Church. Laura then moved back to Laurens where she has lived until her death. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, Stitchers, Federated Woman's Club, Laurens Chapter #265 of the Order of Eastern Star and the Past Matrons Club.
Survivors include her daughters, Maureen, Mrs. Reinhard Friedrich of Ames; Mona, Mrs. Lowell Morgan of Marion and Sharon, Mrs. R. Romano of Van Nuys, Calif.; six grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her husband, son Jerry, her parents, two brothers, Fred and Henry and four sisters, Kate, Bertha, Matilda, and Marie.
