AUGUST W. NILSON CALLED BY DEATH LAST THURSDAY

Rites Held Monday For a Esteemed Union County Man

Following a three-month illness, August W. Nilson passed away at the Akron Hospital, Thursday evening, November 16, 1961. He was 85 years and 3 months of age.

August Weldemar, son of Olaus and Anna Anderson Nilson was born August 16, 1876, in Big Springs Township, Union County, South Dakota (then Dakota Territory). His parents were among the earliest settlers there and endured all the hard ships of pioneer life on a homestead claim. In 1882 they moved to a farm in Sioux Valley Township, which had remained August Nilson’s home the reminder of his life.

At an early age, on January 1, 1877, he was baptized and on September 4, 1862, was confirmed in the union Creek Lutheran church. His education was attained at the spring Creek school in Sioux Valley Township.

On September 10, 1902, he married Miss Ruth Johnson. To this union three children were born: a son, Sigmund August, and two daughters, Iszetta Ruth and Arlus Loreen. His wife passed away March 19, 1929.

Mr. Nilson is survived by: his son, Sigmund, who daughters, Iszetttz Jones, who lives at Docatur, Ill., and Arlus Deaton who with her husband Matthew have made their home with him since March 1, 1959, to help care for him in his advanced age; seven grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchild.

Preceding him in death besides his wife and parents were three sisters, Mrs. Ingeborg Halvorsen, Mrs. Annie Wallin and Mrs. Dagmar Bredall, and a grandson Loren Nilson.

Mr. Nilson devoted his life to farming, to helpfulness and kindness to those about him. He will be missed by not only those near to him, but by a great number of friends.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Union Creek Lutheran church, Pastor David Roy officiating. Vocalists were Mrs. Victor Clark and mr. Dennis Hultgren, and Mrs. Henry Fickbohn was organist Casket bearers were Quenton Nilson, Eldon Nilson, Earl Newman, Wendall Nilson, Larry Nilson, Arden Nilson and Luney Schreur. Interment was in Riverside cemetery.
