Funeral services for Edward J. Schermerhorn, 67, were held at First Church United, West Liberty, May 25, 1989 with burial in the North Prairie cemetery, West Liberty. Mr. Schermerhorn died at Mercy hospital, Iowa City, May 22.

A graduate of Rutgers University, he was married to Lois Johnston at Dover, N.J. in 1949. He was an army veteran of World War II.

He worked as a soil scientist for the US Soil Conservation service, Department of Agriculture. For 30 years he was involved in soil surveys in Eastern Iowa counties. He also taught soil courses at the University of Iowa and Kirkwood college.

He was a member of First Church United and an elder and deacon in the Presbyterian church. He was a member of the Soil Conservation Society of America, the Professional Soil Classifiers of Iowa, the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, NARFE and the Post Hole Diggers of South Dakota.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Elizabeth Jensen, Newhall; a son, James, Boone; 2 grandchildren; 2 brothers, Arthur, Lake Mohawk, Ohio and Howard, North Royalton, Ohio; his father-in-law, Robert Johnston, Washington and 3 nieces and 3 nephews.
