(Muscatine) The remains of John C. Courtney, a native resident of Muscatine, who died at Davenport on Sunday, were brought to Muscatine Tuesday morning and were interred in St. Mary's cemetery that afternoon at one o'clock, the funeral services being conducted Monday at Davenport. Mr. Courtney was born in Muscatine in 1844, being seventy years of age. When in his youth he took advantage of the new country in the west, proceeding to New Mexico and Arizona and taking up the duties of railroad contractor and builder. He cut the big tunnel through the mountain at Rotoun, Colo., and assisted in building the Santa Fe railroad in that state. The decedent was stricken with paralysis and was deprived of his voice about twenty-five years ago, the back set in health causing him to retire at that time. Mr. Courtney resided with his nephews, J. P. Courtney, J.T. Courtney and Michael Courtney of Wapello and Frank Courtney of Wyman, Iowa and also spent some time at Davenport.
