NUBSON FAMILY
The Nubson family, once prominent in the Rock Creek community of Cedar Township, had a difficult early pioneer history. There still are, to this day, quite a few descendants of this family in Mitchell County but none of them carry the name Nubson.
Christopher Nubson, born in Norway, immigrated to Wisconsin with his parents in 1861 at the age of 19. He moved to Mitchell County in 1869 and bought a farm in Cedar Township. In 1872 he married Marit Lindelien who had also been born in Norway and who had immigrated in 1869. Christopher built a house (three rooms down and two up) in which they had ten children of which eight survived childhood, six girls and two boys. Most later descendants were from the girls and thus no Nubson names remain in the county now.
Christopher sought more land and in his quest made a trip to North Dakota in 1893. He contracted typhoid fever and died that same year.
Merit was left with eight children, mostly girls, and most of them under 16 years of age, with the oldest boy being 15. Marit raised that family, operated the farm with the children's help, maintained a religious determination and held the family together in a loyalty that never was broken. Marit died in 1942 at the age of 91. I remember her in the 1920's and 1930s as the undoubted matriarch of the family consisting of all of her descendants at that time.
Each Sunday after church, her children and grandchildren who lived in the community would gather at her home for dinner and family conversation. The great respect and awe all of the others displayed for her was openly evident. The hardships and diversities she had experienced in Mitchell County showed distinctly in the lines of her face which had taken on great character and dignity. Through all of this, she had remained cheerful.
Christopher and Marit had ten children. The second generation totaled only six descendants but the third generation produced sixteen descendants and the fourth generation twenty five. Today there are forty-nine descendants of Christopher and Marit that are still living but many of these have migrated to other parts of the country, including California, Colorado, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, and North Dakota. Thirteen still live in Mitchell County with six in other parts of Iowa.
The Nubson descendants have branched into many fields. Included are farmers, teachers, homemakers, an accountant, a banker, a child care service operator, and engineer, a geologist, a real estate person, a resort owner and operator, and a television producer.
Out of the difficult pioneer life and early family diversity has come a demonstration of the great mixing pot and land of opportunity that is the American way.
