Mrs. John M. Burke died late Sunday, May 2, 1971 at the Houlahan nursing home, Springville, following a lingering illness. She was a member of St. Patrick's church, Anamosa.
Funeral services for Mrs. Burke were held Wednesday, May 5 at St. Patrick's church. The Rev. Clement J. Burke was principal celebrant at the Mass. Concelebrants included the Rev. Alfred Brosius, pastor of St. Patrick's; the Rev. Robert Ament, pastor of St. Isidore's, Springville; the Rev. Carl Manternach, Marion; the Rev. Thomas Bisenius, Castle Grove; Rev. Robert Swift, Oxford Junction. The Most Rev. James J. Byrne, Archbishop of Dubuque, presided at the Mass and gave the final abolution. The Rev. Alfred Brosius preached the sermon. Interment was at Mt. Calvary, Ryan.
Mrs. Burke was born June 10, 1898 near Castle Grove, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John B. Cashman. She was married to John M. Burke April 18, 1923 at St. Mary's church, Manchester. Since 1938 the Burkes have lived in the Anamosa area.
Survivors are her husband, John M. Burke; two daughters, Mrs. Robert S. (Eileen) Kula, Anamosa; Mrs. Arnie (Donna Rose) Ditch, Manchester; two sons, John C., Anamosa and the Rev. Clement J. Burke, associate pastor of St. Mary's church, Waterloo. Other survivors are a sister, Mrs. William Hagen, Cedar Rapids; two brothers, Clement Cashman, Cedar Rapids; Patrick Cashman, Alhambra, Calif.; and 22 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother; two sisters, Rose Camille Cashman and Mrs. Glen Simmons; three brothers, Harold, Joseph and Thomas Cashman.
Pallbearers were Neil Dougherty, Louis Fay, Gene Flaherty, Glen McLaughlin, J. August Pearson and Richard Simmons.
Lectors at the mass were J. C. Burke and his son, Patrick. Servers were John, Brien, Kevin and Patrick Burke, Chris Schoon and Jim Brady.
