HUDGELL -- Dec. 17, 1871, of Diphtheria, Verdy Edwin, son of Joseph and Melinda J. HUDGEL. Aged four years and nine months.
Dearest Verdy, thou hast left us;
Here our loss we deeply feel;
But 'tis God that has bereft us,
He can see all our sorrows heal.When on earth thou didst cheer us
With the charms of earthly joy,
Now to heaven thou dost endear us
Happy, darling, angel boy. B. F. D.~~~~

*Transcribed for genealogy purposes; I have no relation to the person(s) mentioned.Note: Buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Fairfield, IA, in Lot Old.P.091. He was the son of Joseph and Malinda Jane WILSON HUDGEL. Though the stone is difficult to read with respect to age, it appears to say 4 years and 9 days, not the 4 years and 9 months mentioned in the obituary. Because of this it's difficult to pin down a birthdate for him, however in the 1870 census he's noted as two years old (effective July 6, 1870), and the age on the gravestone appears to be more correct then. There are no government-issued records such as birth and death certificates at this point in time because they were not required to be kept until July of 1880.
