Page 5, Column 3JOSEPH HUDGELL (sic) DIED AT HOME TUESDAY
Josep (sic) HUDGEL, an old and respected resident of Jefferson County, passed away at his home in this city Tuesday morning after an illness of several weeks.
Mr. HUDGELL (sic) was born in Warren County, Ohio, April 20, 1843. At the age of twelve he came to this county and with the exception of two years spent in Kansas and one year at Birmingham, he has made his home here.
Mr. HUDGELL enlisted in Company B, 19th Iowa Infantry, on August 9, 1862. He was taken prisoner at Atchafalaya, La., September 20, 1863 and was confined in the Confederate prison at Tyler, Texas. After being exchanged he returned to his regiment and continued to serve his country until he was mustered out at Mobile, Alabama, at the close of the war.
On February 24, 1867, he was united in marriage with Melinda Jane WILSON. Seven children graced this union, two of them preceding the father in death.
He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. George OLIVER, of this city; four sons, Grant and Lincoln of near Fairfield; Ernest, of Burlington, and Edward, of Birmingham; and one brother, David, residing north of Fairfield.
Mr. HUDGELL was a member of the Presbyterian church and of the George Strong Post of the G. A. R.
Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Dr. Charles Preston Foreman. Interment was made in the Evergreen cemetery.
