Tuesday rites for composer of Fairfield High pep song

Gladys WEST HUDDLESTON SPRATT, 86, who died March 6 at Fort Smith, Ark., is remembered by a number of Fairfield residents as the author of the Fairfield High School Pep Song.

As a result of her efforts, Fairfield sports fans have jumped to their feet at the first note of "Cheer For Fairfield High" and urged the school's athletes to bring home a victory for well over 60 years.

It is belived Mrs. SPRATT graduated from the Fairfield High School with the Class of 1917. The Ledger file of FHS Quills is incomplete during the early years. The first year book was published in 1912. There are no copies for the years 1913, 1915 and 1917.

Gladys WEST is not listed among the seniors in the 1916 Quill so it is assumed she was a member of the 1917 class.

The first time the Fairfield Pep Song appeared in a Quill was in 1921. It was noted as "The Most Popular Song of FHS." It occupied a full page including both verses and the chorus.

Graveside services for Gladys WEST HUDDLESTON SPRATT will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Evergreen Cemetery. Raymond Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Gladys WEST HUDDLESTON SPRATT was born Jan. 7, 1899, in Jefferson County. She was the daughter of Lewis and Estella FOOTE (sic - Lewis and Estella FOOTE WEST). Her late husband, Dr. Keith SPRATT, also a former Fairfield resident, died Sept. 13, 1983.
