Stockton Monroe Swaney born 06 Nov 1854, was four years old when his family made the two month journey to Iowa, arriving on May 3, 1855. In 1871, or 1872, Stockton graduated from high school in Marengo, Iowa Co. Iowa, one of only 700 towns in the United States to have a high school.
He married on November 16, 1876 to Lucy Ellen (Ella) Mason, daughter of Ransom and Elizabeth (Danskin) Mason, at her home near Kellogg, Jasper Co. Iowa. She was one of seven children. He was 22 years old and she was 20 years. He was a teacher for at least one term, probably before his marriage, when his father gave him 160 acres of government land that he had obtained earlier near the Mason farm home.
Stockton was only 5 foot 7 inches and weighed 190 pounds and was physically powerful and "Fell to the Will" developing three farms.
He died 4 December 1900, of what his doctor and his family felt was overwork.
(He died on his farm near Marengo, IA; buried at the IOOF Cem, Marengo Iowa Co. IA.)
