My great-grandparents , a Craft and a Fields were first cousins once
removed, the grandmother of one was the sister of the other's mother. This
was her first marriage and his third. My Fields great-grandparent was the
only child of the eight born to the Fields-Gorby couple to live to
adulthood. I do not want to go into any more detail than that as they both
lived into the 1930s, however I will give a history of the families that
eventually moved to Iowa Co., IA.Craft
According to the writings of M.C. Wiley, former resident and businessman of
Lowell, [IN]; three Craft brothers came to America from England in the
1620's. They settled first in the New Jersey area, moved on to Maryland and
then to Pennsylvania. I found John and Lawrence Craft in 1768 Baltimore
Co., MD. Lawrence and William are listed in the 1st Co., 1st Bn. PA in
1782. My direct Craft ancestors moved from Washington Co., PA to Koszta,
Iowa Co., IA after 1857 and before 1859. He was Stephen Craft born on 19
Mar. 1820 in Washington Co., PA, the son of John Craft and Abigail Conklin,
he served in Co. E. of the Twenty-Fourth Iowa Infantry during the Civil War,
his death was on 02 Jan. 1863 in Helena AR, with burial in the Koszta
Cemetery. Accompanying him to Iowa were his second wife Eleanor Teagarden
whom he had married on 12 Apr. 1848 in PA, she was born in 1825 in PA, the
daughter of Abraham Teagarden and Nancy Ann McGuire, her death was on 13
Sep. 1895 in Koszta, IA, with burial in the Koszta Cemetery. The couple
brought children: Abigail Jane, the only child of Stephen's first wife who
had been born on 08 May 1943 in PA; and their children Thomas Bruce born in
1849 in Greene Co., PA, Annie Charity born 10 Jan. 1851 in Greene, Co., PA,
Oliver H., Craft born 1853 in PA, George Williamson born 05 Mar. 1855 in
Washington Co., PA, and Mary Elizabeth born 1857 in Washington Co. PA; their
only child born in Iowa was William M. born on 12 Jan. 1859 in Koszta, Iowa
Co., IA.Teagarden
According to book The Descendants of Abraham Tegarden (revised edition 1988
by George and Shirley Teegarden) The first Teagarden ancestor in the
Americas was Abraham Tegarden who brought his family from Germany to America
arriving on 01 Sep. 1736. From another source I have, "with Abraham Sr.
were sons, Abraham Teagarden, Jr. William and George." Abraham Teagarden II
was living in Frederick Co., MD 12 Dec. 1757. The family settled first and
thereafter they settled in Washington/Greene Co., PA. Eleanor (Teagarden)
Craft's grandfather William and great-grandfather Abraham are listed as
officers with the Virginia Militia. Eleanor Teagarden moved with her
husband Stephen Craft and their children, from PA to Koszta, Iowa Co., IA
after 1857 and before 1859 . In addition Mary Ann Teagarden (born on 01
Feb. 1813 in Washington Co., PA, daughter of William and Bethia (Craig)
Teagarden ) moved to Iowa Co., IA with her husband Lewis Fields. Also Rhoda
Teagarden (born in 1824 in PA, daughter of Samuel and Katherine (McGuire)
Teagarden moved to Iowa Co., IA between 1850 and 1860, with her husband
William M. Fields, they moved to KS after 1860.Gorby
The first Gorby in the Americas seems to be Samuel I who was in the
Newcastle Co, DE/Chester Co, PA by 1720. It is said that Samuel was a
physician and surgeon and that he served in the Colonial Wars and the
Revolution, and was of advanced age at the time. My direct ancestor, also a
Samuel was born in 1817 in PA, probably the son of Joseph Gorby III, his
death was on 28/29 Nov. 1893 in Omaha, NE. He was married to Emaline Shay
about 1844 probably in Wilkins Township, Allegheny Co., PA. Emaline was
born in 1821 in PA, she was the daughter of Rosannah (Unknown) Shay, her
death was on 07 July 1894 in Omaha, NE. The family of Samuel and Emaline
moved to Marengo Township, Iowa Co. IA in 1853 with their children, Roseann
J., born on 10 May 1845 in PA, Sarah A. born in 1847 in PA, David H. born
1849 in PA, Samuel P. born 1851 in PA, their children Joseph W Gorby were
born in 1856 in IA, Emma E. in 1859 in KS, E. Lewis in 1861 in KS, and Kate
E. in 1864 in IA.Fields
The first Fields ancestor in the Americas was John Fields I immigrating
prior to 1769 to Sussex Co., DE. By 1850 Lewis Fields (born in 1812 in DE,
son of John Fields II and Rachel Phippen was married to Mary Ann Teagarden
(born in 1813 in PA, daughter of Abraham Teagarden II and Mary Ann McGuire)
and was living in Washington Co., PA. By 1860 he had moved his family to
Honey Creek Township, Iowa Co., IA. They had children Alexander T. born
1841 in PA, Francis M. born 1843 in PA, George born 1847 in PA, Samuel born
1849 in PA, Rachael born 1852 PA, and Catherine b. 1856 PA. Lewis died
about 1902 in Mitchellville, Polk Co., IA, with burial possibly in the
Koszta Cemetery, Iowa Co., IA with no headstone. Mary Ann died on 23 Sep.
1878 in Koszta, Iowa Co., IA, with burial in the Koszta Cemetery. In
addition the brother of Lewis Fields, William M. Fields (born 06 Aug. 1822
in PA, died 17 July 1913) and wife Rhoda Teagarden (born 20 Mar. 1824,
daughter of Samuel Teagarden and Katherine McGuire, died 10 Mar. 1913)
moved from PA to Iowa Co., IA between 1850 and 1860 and then moved to KS
after 1860. Also Eleanor Teagarden (born in 1825 in PA, the daughter of
Abraham Teagarden and Nancy Ann McGuire, died on 13 Sep. 1895 in Koszta,
IA, with burial in the Koszta Cemetery) and her husband Stephen Craft (born
on 19 Mar. 1820 in Washington Co., PA, the son of John Craft and Abigail
Conklin, death was on 02 Jan. 1863 in Helena AR with burial in the Koszta
Cemetery) moved from PA to Koszta, Iowa Co., IA after 1857 and before 1859.
