Death Results From Horrible Accident.
After terrible sufferings as a result of a shocking accident, death finally came to Carl Christianson, who was injured in a threshing machine Friday morning of last week. Weakened by the shock and pain of the horrible accident and the consequent loss of blood, after the amputation of one limb, the poor victim was left in such a condition that the other lib could not be removed at once, and gangrene settling in, death came early Monday morning to relieve him from his awful agony. The accident was one of the most tragic that has ever occurred here and in his sad death everyone in the community felt the shock of intense sorrow.
Carl was working with the Barkhuff threshing machine, with which he had been employed for some time and where because of his industry, aptness and conscientious faithfulness, he was regarded as a very valuable assistant. The machine was at work at the Mendenhall from north of Ellsworth Friday when the accident occurred. In some way while at work on the top of the separator a trap door gave way beneath his weight dropping the young man feet first into the machine just in front of the cylinder.
The flesh on on the back of both legs was torn and terribly mangled and severe bruises were sustained about his hips. The injured man was taken to the Jasper Swigert home where physicians examined him and did everything possible to ally his awful pain and if possible save his life. On Saturday forenoon an amputation was performed, the left leg being removed between the knee and the hip, and later it was decided that the right leg must be removed below the knees. His weakened condition however prevented the attending physicians performing the operation at once, and Sunday gangrene set in resulting in death during the night at about one o'clock.
The funeral services were held yesterday at two o'clock from the Lutheran church, conducted by Rev. W. C. Cole and the body was laid to rest in Evergreen cemetery here.
