OBITUARIES

GUSTAV TJERNAGEL

Gustav Cornelius Tjernagel, son of Lars Tjernagel, was born on his father's homestead 2 1/2 miles southeast of Randall, Nov. 23, 1913, and passed away near Spicer, Minn., Feb. 19, 1941, at the age of 27 years. He spent his childhood and youth in his parents' home and in the neighborhood.

He was physically strong and apparently destined to live a long life, but physical strength, good as it is, is no assurance of a long life. Six years ago he contracted diabetes, from which he suffered ever since and which finally caused his early departure. About Christmas time last year he took a trip to Hawick, Minn., to visit his sister, and while there he was engaged in doing chores for a farmer. His health seemed fairly good until Friday, Feb. 14 when he was taken very ill. His brothers and sisters went to see him, but he was at that time in a coma; however, he seemed to recognize them in flashes of consciousness. After his departure Lester Henderson, Story City undertaker, was called and brought the body to Story City.

His mother and a brother have preceded him in death; his mother on Dec. 20, 1924, and his brother Ole on April 19, 1938. Those who mourn his early departure are his father, Lars Tjernagel; five brothers: Haktor of Radcliffe, Lars l. of Story City, Christian of Randall, John and Bendick at home; seven sisters: Barbara Anderson of Hawick, Minn., Elizabeth Braland of Story City, Louise Hall of Randall, Helen Braland of Randall, Rose Braland of Story City, Agatha Olson of Spicer, Minn., and Anna Hall of Ellsworth.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. G. O. Paulsrud from home and the Elim church, Randall on Feb. 24, 1941. A quartet, consisting of Mrs. P. G. Pederson, Mrs. Clarence Larson, Ole J. Sopeland and S. M. Teigland, sang two appropriate songs. A sum of money was given in memory of Gustav to different missions. Pall bearers were Peder and Herman Tjernagel, Ben and George Hall, Nomer Owenson and Earl Sevold. Interment was made at Mamrelund cemetery.
