MRS. O. H. OLSON AN EARLY SETTLER
Julia Sunnoe Olson was born at Sunnoe, Norway, on the 6th of August, 1860, and passed away at 8:30 p.m. September 10, 1937. At the time of her passing she had attained the age of 77 years, 1 month and 14 days.
As a little ten year old girl she came with her parents to America. Her first home in this country was in Grundy county, Ill. During her stay in Illinois she was confirmed in the Lutheran faith by the venerable pioneer pastor, P. A. Rasmussen. Then, in 1875, shortly after her confirmation, she followed her parents into Hamilton county, Iowa, where they settled on the farm eight miles northwest of Story City. This newly established home continued to be her home until the 28th day of February, 1895. On that day she was united in marriage to O. H. Olson in the St. Paul church by Rev. B. Mikkelson. This happy union was blessed with five children, three boys and two girls.
Mrs. Olson lived a happy married life. She was given health and strength to take care of the home and to rear the children. The last few years of her life, when her health gave way and strength was fading, it was a source of increasing joy and blessing to her to have husband, children and grandchildren gather about the now helpless mother to unitedly voice their prayer, praise and thanks giving to God for full and free salvation in Christ. "O happy home, where Thou art not forgotten. When joy is overflowing, full and free; O happy home, where every wounded spirit is brought. Physician. Comforter, to Thee: Until as last, when earth's day's work is ended; All meet Thee in the blessed home above. From whence Thou earnest, where Thou hast ascended. Thy everlasting home of peace and love." Now Mrs. Olson has finished her course, her struggles in life are over. In the cross of Christ she gloried. She is Home.
She leaves to mourn her departure her husband, O. H. Olson; five children: Omar, Herman, Orville, Hattie and Ruby (Mrs. Tressler); six grandchildren; five brothers: John, Paul, Henry, Carl, Albert, all of Story City; three sisters: Mrs. D. Beckley of Nevada, Mrs. Ole Boe and Mrs. E. P. Frette of Story City. Also a host of relatives and friends.
The departed had held membership in the St. Paul Lutheran church since 1880.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Sept. 23, first at the home and then in the St. Paul's church, conducted by Rev. Oppedal. Special singing was by Mrs. Ben Anderson and Truman Quam and the grandchildren also sang a song, the last one they had sung for grandmother while she lived.
The pall bearers were: Otis Frette, Joe Sunnoe, Joe Anfinson, Orville Jacobson, Ole Jacobson and Oreas Boe.
As a memorial of the departed a sum of forty-five dollars was given to missions by the family, relatives, friends and the East ladies aid society.
