KARI SWENSON BRATTELAND

Kari Swenson Bratteland was born near Stavanger, Norway, on December 18, 1858. She was baptized and confirmed in he Lutheran faith in Norway and there grew to womanhood. But in 1881, she, with her parents, came to America. They located at Morris, Ill. The same year, Kari was there married to Sven Bratteland.* After a few years stay at Morris, Ill., the young and hopeful Bratteland family moved to Iowa. They established their permanent home there on the Bratteland homestead 3 miles southwest of Randall. Their home was blessed with eleven children, four girls and seven boys.

The deceased has been of rather poor health for some time. As it became evident that the hour for the setting of her life's sun was near, she declared to her loved ones about her that her greatest wish was to get to meet her Savior. She died at her home about noon August 2, 1937, at the age of 79 years. Her husband and three sons, Peter, Severt and Annas preceded her in death.

Eight children are left to mourn the departure of a dear mother: Martha Hendrickson, Frost, Minnesota; Lena Christianson, Des Moines; Elmer Swenson, Leon; Hartwick Swenson, Jewell; Selma Walkenhauer, Randall; Jonas Swenson, Randall and Stella Risvold of Story City.

A step-son, Edward Swenson of Brainerd, Minn., and a step-daughter, Mrs. Ole Rossing who preceded her in death in 1915.

She also leave 15 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren and a number of relatives in this country and Norway.

Kari Swenson Bratteland has been a member of the Lutheran church at Randall for over 45 years.

Burial services were held at the Elim Lutheran church, on August 4, at 2 o'clock. Rev. H. O. Oppedahl officiated. Burial was in Mt. Olive cemetery.

*SUBMITTER'S NOTE: The marriage record shows Sven Segueson married Carrie Ellessdater on 22 July 1882 in Grundy County, Illinois. All the children (including those from Sven's first marriage) took then last name Swenson in the patronymic manner. Other sources list Kari's parents as Ellef Bratteland and Petrus Stumere.
