BRALAND A NATIVE OF THIS STATE
Deceased Pioneer Had Lived in This Community All His Life
Andreas Braland was born Sept. 3, 1857, near Story City. He was the son of Elling and Brita Braland. He lived all his life in this community north of Story City, and in August of this year moved to our town. In the early morning hours of Monday, Nov. 4, he suffered a stroke, and died shortly after noon the same day.
The funeral was held in the St. Petri church, Rev. W. B. Scarvie officiating, and interment was in the Mamrelund cemetery. At the funeral service the text used was Phil. 1:21-23, and Mrs. Lester Henderson sang "I'm But a Stranger Here." The pallbearers were Ben Borwick, Osmund Tungesvik, Tom Anfinson, Sam Jacobson, George Ness and John Borwick.
Mr. Braland was married to Mattie Mortvedt on January 26, 1882, and moved the same year to the farm in Hamilton county where he lived for 53 years. Ten children born of which three, together with his wife, preceded him in death. The children surviving are: Bertha, of Story City; Oscar and Alfred, of Radcliffe; Mrs. Marie Peterson, of Ames; Mrs. Clara Ryan, of Radcliffe; Mrs. Alvina Osmundson and Amos Braland, of Story City. The children who have passed away are Marie, Mrs. L. E. (Emma) Henderson, and Mrs. Morris (Anna) Henderson.
Mr. Braland was of that sturdy group of men and women whose ranks are rapidly being thinned out, who lived thru the pioneer period of our history in this community. He saw, in his lifetime of 78 years, the tremendous changes brought about thru industry, thrift and progressive spirit. He was a representative of that generation of pioneers who, in spite of their shortcomings and imperfections, nevertheless, as a group, have left to us a heritage of fundamental virtues, such as self-reliance, thrift, diligence, honesty, courage, and reverence, all of which need reviving in our generation.
He was a man of deep religious convictions, humble faith, conscientious to do the right, and unwilling to compromise his conscience for the sake of expediency.
Many tributes of floral wreaths and a considerable sum of money for benevolent and missionary purposes were given by members of the family, relatives and friends, in loving memory.
