Mrs. John Saathoff was born in Critzum, Eastfriesland, Germany, Feb. 25h, 1840. She was married in her native country in 1866. Shortly after she and her husband came to this country and they located at Freeport, Ill. They lived there for three years and in 1869 they came west to Grundy county. Mrs. Saathoff remembers seeing the total eclipse of the sun in the year 1869. When the family first came to Grundy county they moved on a farm a half mile south of where the town of Wellsburg now is. A year later they bought a place in Colfax township where they lived continually until twelve years ago when the family moved to Grundy Center. Mr. Saathoff died five years ago. Since that time the wife has been living in the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. H. Dirks. Though well advanced in years Mrs. Saathoff continues to enjoy good health.
