OBITUARY

Albert (Bert) Gideon McKean, son of Thaddeus and Frances McKean, was born July 20, 1878 in Kansas. A long time Hamburg resident, he died at Hamburg Community Hospital March 21, at the age of 87 years, 8 months, and one day. He was admitted to the hospital that morning and died a few hours later due to heart failure.

The McKean family is one of the oldest in the community. Robert McKean, grandfather of Bert, erected the brick house now occupied by Earl Cowles and which was known as the old Cowles homestead.

Bert spent his childhood and early manhood in Fremont County. He moved to South Dakota in 1909, homesteading a farm on which he lived until 1926 when he moved to a farm near Shambaugh, Ia. In 1930 he moved back to Hamburg where he lived until his death.

He was married to Pearl Mildred Hilton March 12, 1917. To this union two sons were born.

He was preceded in death by his parent, five brothers, Steven, Ralph, Bruce, Clay and Ernest; two sisters, Grace and Nettie.

Survivors include his wife, Pearl; two sons, Glen E. of Baltimore, Md. and and Lloyd R. of Santa Maria, Calif.; two brothers, Joe of Hamburg, and George of Syracuse, Nebr.; four grandchildren,; three great-grandchildren; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Funeral services were held at Johnson Funeral Home Thursday, March 24, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Howard Ball officiating. Burial was at Mt. Zion Cemetery.
