I might connect. My ancestor, John McDonnell and his brother Patrick were headed to Clinton, Iowa with the family when the two brothers decided to head to MS. I believe the others did continue to Clinton. It was said they were Master carpenters. So that fits both places.
There are 3 McDonnells buried in the Holy Cross cemetery in Clinton. I have not seen photos but Jane d 1866; Michael d. 1877, Ellen d. 1888. What their relationship is, I do not know. I hope that the 1860 census will tell me if I can find it. Were there other McDonnells in Clinton in 1860? IF so were the living close to these three or any one of them?
I have been told there is a stone or marker on Jane's grave and it is in memory from her son John. This makes perfect sense that John would put a stone for his mother when he was financially able. Who Michael and Ellen are I do not know. I should have an idea in the census.
I feel certain that there were others in the family who continued to Iowa together. Who, how many, I have no idea. I have yet to find John naming any of his 11 children for his family other than his first born, a dau. has Jane as part of her name.
If this sound like it could connect to you, please let me know.
