Hi Karon,
The Hess family came to Clinton Co., IA from Otego, (Otsego), NY in 1810 via
Oxford Co. Canada.Because David is not my ancestor I have limited information on him. Most of
the family is buried in the Hess Cemetery in Hampshire Twsp. but not David
or his wife .He had children, Augusta and Augustas twins, Murietta, Oscar, Granville and
Charles, Arvilla and Lovina. He lived in either Clinton, Hampshire or Lyons
townships from 1844 through 1880. He was not listed in the Lyons or Clinton
City Directories for 1883/84.I haven't tried to trace him further.
Is it possible that although Kate and her sister came on the orphan train
from NY city that they actually originated from the same county in NY that
the Hess family came from and there is some connection there? Was her
sister also in a Hess household? In the 1870 NY census there is a Catherine Griffin age 7 and a Hannah
Griffin age 8 on the same page of an orphan asylum in NY. 22 Ward 17th
Election Dist. pg 651. Could this be them?
I didn't fine a Lenore listed.I'm sorry I can't be of more help....it's quite a puzzle. Loanne in CA
