S.P. Sladden, who recently arrived in this city from Eugene, Oregon, and who has been dangerously ill since, passed away yesterday afternoon at 1:40 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E.D. Burgess. Mr. Sladden's death is the result of septic poison caused by decayed teeth, complicated with valvular heart trouble.
Sidney P. Sladden was born Jan. 22, 1832, at Herne Parsonage, county of Kent, England, and was confirmed at Canterbury Cathedral. He was united in marriage with Harriett E. Pocock, December 23, 1855, at Muscatine, Iowa.
Deceased leaves a wife and three children -- Mrs. Fannie Sladden-Nelson of Chicago; Mrs. Edward D. Burgess of Webster City; Sidney C. Sladden of New York City; and two grandddaughter, Mrs. James A. Buell and Miss Buelah M. Sladden. All of those were present when the deceased passed away. Father Sladden called each one to his bedside and after embracing and kissing them was ready to go.
Mr. Sladden retired from the wholesale grocery business in Chicago in 1881, after which the family removed to Webster City and resided here until 1885. During that time Mr. and Mrs. Sladden's daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Nelson, made their home here, Mr. Nelson being engaged in the lumber business.
While the deceased was a resident here he built the home now occupied by C.A. Brennecke and family and also the residence just east of the Brennecke home.
The funeral was held this afternoon at 4 o'clock at the Burgess home on Willson avenue, conducted by Rev. J.O. Thrush of the Congregational church.
The remains will be taken to Chicago this evening, accompanied by Mrs. Sladden, Mrs. Nelson, Mrs. Burgess and S.C. Sladden. The body will be laid at rest in Rose Hill cemetery.
In their great sorrow the family have the sympathy of all their Webster City friends.

Notes: Sidney P. Sladden appears on Mendon twp., Clayton co., Iowa draft rolls & tax records in the early 1860s and is listed as a McGregor twp. Grocer in the 1865 Iowa State Gazetteer Business Register. Capt. Sladden enlisted in the Civil War from McGregor and served in Co. C, 3rd IA. (see his entry on the Clayton co. Civil War Honor Roll, link below ) The Sladden's had at least one additional child not mentioned in his obituary, a baby son, George S. Sladden, whose 1862 death notice is posted on this Obituary board.
