Former Pioneer is Dead
On Saturday John McNight received a telegram announcing the death on the fifteenth of Mrs. Sarah Hempstead de Lorimier.

Mrs. de Lorimier was born in St. Louis Dec. 1, 1826. For the past two years she has resided in South Dakota with her grandchildren, Roy, Mae and Louise Hodges and Mrs. Will Van Brocklin, but previous to that time, her home from girlhood had been Iowa.

Here she grew to womanhood, here in 1843, she married Mr. Verneul de Lorimier, one of a well known and highly respected family in the early days of Dubuque. Here she shared the responsibilities, the trials and the joys that go to make the life of the community as well as of the home. Mrs. de Lorimier was one of a noble band of women to whom much of the prosperity of the Iowa of today is due.

It is difficult for those of a later generation to fully appreciate the value of the strength, the courage, the cheerful support given to the founders of a state by such women as Mrs. Sarah de Lorimier and her sisters, Mrs. Mary de Lorimier and Mrs. Cornelia McKnight, of Dubuque, Mrs. Susan Davis, of Elkader; Mrs. Clarissa Campbell, Mrs. Caroline Updegraff and Mrs. Isabelle Baber, of Macomb, Ill.

Mrs. de Lorimier was one of the last survivors of the early days but she never lost her interest in the old home and twice she visited it after she had passed the eightieth mile-stone of life' journey, a welcome guest to life long friends.

Kind, serene, courteous, she impressed those with whom she came in contact as one who had lived in an atmosphere of peace and good will. She gave of the best to others and called out in turn the best that was theirs to give.

Mrs. de Lorimier is survived by one son L.F. de Lorimier, of Omaha; by ten grandchildren, three great grandchildren, by Mrs. Geo. D. Scott, Mr. John and Miss Rebecca McKnight, of Dubuque, and many other nieces and nephews.

Through life Mrs. de Lorimier was a devoted member of the Catholic church. The remains arrived in the city Monday morning and were taken to the residence of Mr. John McKnight, 125 Seventeenth street. The funeral services will be held at St. Patrick's church Tuesday morning, Sept. 19th, at 8:30 o'clock. Interment will be in Linwood.
