Phyllis Laveen Fullerton West 1917-2001

Phyllis Laveen West, daughter of Thomas Burton and Maude Grace Carrier Fullerton, was born Aug. 2, 1917, at Osceola and died May 13, 2001, at Osceola Nursing and Rehab Center. She was 83.

She received her education in the Grand River Schools where she graduated with the Class of 1933. She went on to Drake University where she earned her bachelor of science degree.

She married Oren Alvin West on May 25, 1938, in Osceola and they became the parents of two sons, Merwyn and Tom.

Mrs. West taught school for many years in Clarke and Decatur Counties before she retired because of her health in 1981. She lived all of her life in Decatur and Clarke Counties.

She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed cooking for her family . She liked to crochet and help on the farm. She especially liked the little lambs and calves.

Mrs. West was a lifetime member of the I.E.A. and a member of the Mount Zion Christian Church in Decatur County.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Oren and a sister, Opal, in infancy.

Mrs. West is survived by two sons, Merwyn West and his wife, Freddie West, of Jackson Hole, Wyo. and Tom West and his wife, Shelley West, of Grand River; seven grandchildren,Whitney West, Shelbie West and Austin West, all of Grand River, Monica Beck of Fort, Texas, Monte West of Denver, Colo., Arthur Lewis and Cindy Lewis, both of Jackson, Wyo.; a great-granddaughter, Heather Speckhals of Jackson; one sister, Berniece Burchett and her husband, Mansel Burchett, of Creston; as well as other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were May 17 at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola, the Rev. Terry Roberts of Leon officiating. Pennie Gonseth, organist, accompanied Pastor Chuck DeVos as he sang Beyond the Sunset and How Great Thou Art.

Casket bearers were Adam Taylor, Bill Carper, Gary Dugger, Randy Dugger, Ron Tjelmeland and Clint Tjelmeland. Interment was in Gregg Cemetery in Clarke County.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Gregg Cemetery Association or the Murray School Foundation.
