Ronald R. Maffett, the oldest child of Harold Edward Maffett and Nellie Alice Siefkas Maffett, was born March 30, 1923 in Hopeville, Iowa. He passed away on September 13, 2003 at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des moines, Iowa at the age of 80 years.

Ronald graduated from Murray High School in 1939. He lived in the Murray area all of his life. He was united in marriage to Leora Little, daughter of Charles and Iva Loomis Little in Bartlesville, Oklahoma; they were the parents of two children, Thomas Eugene and Kathi Lynn.

Ronald served in the United States Army during World War II. He was assigned to the Armored Corps and stationed in Burma during his 3 years of service. After being honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant, he returned to Murray where he owned and operated the Murray Cafe until 1970. Ronald was also the Postmaster in Murray and was a rural mail carrier until his retirement in 1986. He was a member of the Murray Fire Department for 20 years, serving as Fire Chief from 1967 to 1983. He was awarded the Governor's Leadership award in 1979.

Ron was an active member of the William-Lochrie American Legion Post #405 in Murray for 55 years. He was also a past member of the Murray Housing Board.

Ron enjoyed spending time with his family. He was also an avid sports fan, especially the University of Iowa Hawkeyes. He also enjoyed reading and fishing.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents and his son-in-law, Roger Gaumer.

He is survived by his wife Leora of Murray; son Thomas Maffett and wife Gloria of Lorimor, daugher Kathi Gaumer of Murray; sister, Joyce Parker of Powderly, Texas; grandchildren, Jill Maffett, Tracy Maffett, Jeremy Gaumer and wife Wendy and Jacki Gaumer all of Des Molines and great granddaughter Amber Gaumer as well as other relatives and a host of friends.
